Your Book of Hours may include visuals\, quotations\, photographs\, original writing\, drawings\, metaphoric images\, maps\, musical scores\, or whatever else you decide on.\nThink of any images that represent the lessons you’ve learned on your spiritual path and bring them along. \nEach day will include talks by Jan on the spiritual concepts\, short videos\, group reflections\, time for rest\, walks and working on your books. \nPreparing for your Book of Hours Retreat\nWe invite you to start preparing for the retreat by becoming aware of writings\, quotations\, and images that are speaking to you in this moment. You might already have a place where you record words and phrases that are meaningful to you. Please bring these journals and resources with you to the retreat. SUMMARY:Sabbatical for the Soul
DESCRIPTION:This sabbatical is at Muse Lodge\, in the foothills of the Adirondacks in upstate NY. It starts at noon on Monday\, August 19 and ends at noon on Friday\, August 23. The time will be largely your own\, though we will meet for common meals at lunch and dinner. I will facilitate a daily circle that will last approximately an hour\, where I will share a reading and a teaching. During the week\, I will meet with each woman for an hour individually. We will explore whatever you choose to explore. During the week\, I will also take a one-of-a-kind photograph of you that reflects the part of you you want others to see. \nOther than that\, you are free to kayak\, swim\, watch loons\, walk in the woods\, nap\, read\, photograph nature. Probably the need for a field trip will erupt and some of us will go off on an adventure for photographs and ice cream.  \nYou will have your own bedroom\, unless you want to share with a partner. You will go home rested\, excited\, and fully optimistic about creating your life as YOU want it. Himalayan changes will take place in your quiet depths. By the end of the week\, everyone of us will be feeling some kind of magic that calls for a ceremony. We will create that ritual together. SUMMARY:Pilgrims on a Journey (with Michael Morwood)
DESCRIPTION:The roads we travel never look the same. Trees grow taller\, buildings appear that were not the before; buildings that were always there disappear. Our physical journeys are ever changing as well – hair changes colour\, bodies get larger or shorter or wider\, they break down and inevitably die. Our faith journey often follows a similar pattern of growth\, of health\, of disintegration and\, perhaps\, death. \nThe Atlantic Seminar in Theological Education was born in the summer of 1969 out of a need for growth\, a need for spiritual food for those whose chosen path is faith; a need for a community of like-minded pilgrims wanting to share their faith with each other. For 50 years\, this seminar has provided current and controversial topics and grappled with questions of where we currently find ourselves in our individual and corporate journey. From interpretation of scripture to where the church fits in society\, those who have attended have found a safe place to discuss their views and broaden their thoughts\, to discover new ideas and hear stories of faith from those “in the trenches’. \nAs churches grapple with what the future looks like\, as the journey takes on a different view\, we celebrate where we have come from\, what we have accomplished and what we hope to find around the next bend. Come celebrate with us this amazing accomplishment\, come celebrate the heart felt love of this faith of ours and help shape the future of the Atlantic Seminar in Theological Education. \nSharing with us in June\, 2018\, are two wonderful past presenters\, Jan Philips and Michael Morwood. Jan and Michael have been looking forward to a time when they can present together and we are lucky enough to be able to provide that venue. SUMMARY:The Pillowcase Project
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Pillowcase Project —A Case for the Common Good\n \nA group of us met at my house on Sunday\, January 1\, 2017 to experience and shape an idea via our collective wisdom. The questions were posed: \nWhat if we started a social movement using pillowcases as canvases for our dreams for the country and the world? \nWhat if we publicly shared our images of what we are committed to protect and defend? \nWhat if we met to make our pillows together\, share our ideas about making change in our own community\, actually co-created with others a circle of consequence? \nI told the story about the Ribbon Project\, where thousands of us made ribbons\, tied them together and circled the Pentagon in 1985. That project was three years in the making. Three years from now we could mobilize another national event called 20/20 Vision\, hanging our clotheslines around anything we deem necessary at the time. 1700 pillowcases = 1 mile. In Washington\, we had 18 miles of ribbons tied together. \nJustine Merritt founded the Ribbon Project in 1982 as a protest against nuclear arms. She asked people to represent on a yard long piece of fabric what they would hate to lose in a nuclear war. We’re asking people to imagine what they WANT\, to make an image of what they hope for. \nRibbons around Hiroshima \nJustine Merritt in center \nRibbons lining pews in National Cathedral\, Washington\, DC \nWhy a Pillowcase Project? \nI chose pillowcases because everyone can get one inexpensively. Pillows are where our dreams are first imprinted. They are a standard size. You can apply photos\, text\, paint. You can use fabric makers\, photo transfers\, stencils for your words. Or you can design via websites like Artscow or Personalizationmail.. There are plenty of companies that do it. I ordered one at arts cow for under $15. My first attempt before that was a photo collage using stencils and iron on transfer sheets from Michael’s. \nMy first pillowcase with stencils and iron on photo transfer from Michaels. \nPillowcases designed at online pillowcase printers \n  \n \n  \nAs you can see from Fran Dornan’s quilt of my mom and me\, it’s ok to use any fabric you want if you keep it pillowcase size. Our group decided to stay with a horizontal format. What might you heal\, preserve\, defend? Look at what you pray for and represent that visually. Look what is breaking your heart and give voice to that. You can always find pictures of the rainforest\, our endangered waters\, children who need us to be there for them. All your answers are right in your mind already. Tap in. \n  \nWho else can you do this with? \nCall a few friends together for an afternoon. Organize a pillow powwow for your church or social club. Or if you want to work alone\, do that. I will hang them on our clothesline and you will always be with me for local rallies and celebrations.\n \nWhat might you do with your pillowcases? \nSome women here might take their cases to the Women’s March on January 21. (I would but I’ll be in Hiroshima then) The group talked about getting a bunch created then hanging them wherever we want to draw attention. Possibilities for San Diego: Women’s History Museum\, Balboa Park\, Civic Center\, the Mexican border. We will show up wiht our clothesline and cases whenever we want to draw attention to something. \nClotheslines can be strung up easily or simply held up by those who are rallying or walking for a cause. Sometimes I imagine it like a Christos project\, miles of cases strung across a vast space for all to see. \n  \n  \nWhat is the hope for the Pillowcase Project? \n\nIt allows us to call forth our dreams and give voice to the visions our souls support—the first step in manifesting the reality we choose.\nIt is a tool for creating community\, a reason for people to come together and make something of their hopes.\nA clothesline holding 100 pillowcases of what the people care for\, what we commit to protecting is a powerful image. It is a newsworthy event\, a public spectacle\, drawing attention to OUR power to make the news.\nOur images will arouse the public’s moral imagination. Information does not move people\, but art does. DESCRIPTION:A chance to create and re-create ourselves using the beautiful landscape at Kirkridge for our inspiration. Water\, woods\, mountains and rocks will guide us to the metaphors that give power to our poetry\, our imagery\, our stories and our souls. We will follow our heart’s creative desire\, give voice to our intuitions\, and pull up buckets from our wells of wisdom. We will explore every avenue for creative expression\, seeing them as vehicles for our prophetic voices. We will incorporate meditation\, movement\, and mindfulness to enter the depths of our mystic selves and tune into the messages waiting to be heard. This is an opportunity to unplug from stress\, connect with Source\, build community with your sisters\, and surface that voice of your own soul. \nTogether we will experience and celebrate the diversity of our experience\, the commonness of our convictions\, the sacredness of our intentions and the joy of our oneness.
